Sherif Sherif (*1995 in Cairo, Egypt) lives and works between Paris and Switzerland. After studying filmmaking, he completed a Master’s degree in Visual Arts at ECAL (École Cantonale d’Art de Lausanne). His work unfolds through sculpture, video, photography, and installation, and navigates themes such as identity, desire, and migration. Formally, his practice appropriates elements from public space—such as surveillance cameras, anti-bird spikes, and urban electrical terminals—which are often custom-reproduced to represent bodies that are controlled, displaced, and surveilled. Through the use of Plexiglas, red lighting, and 3D printing, Sherif constructs environments in which overflow and irregularity are rendered suspect. These materials become metaphors for the regulation of bodies and desires, questioning dominant societal norms and their violence toward queer and racialised identities.

He has shown his work at CAN Centre d’Art Neuchâtel, where he was selected for Plattform25, as well as in the Carbon17 space project in Aubervilliers. In 2025, he was nominated for the Helvetia Art Prize in Switzerland.

Technical: 3 motors, development board, and Wi-Fi receivers

It’s showtime!!! is a two-channel video and sculptural installation that explores the emotional and psychological states of displacement through the concept of liminal space. At its center is a miniature plexiglass theater, fitted with red stage curtains and two car cooling fans. A synchronized motor links the fans to the video projections. Every few minutes, on a randomized cycle, the fans suddenly activate—producing a loud, noisy sound and causing the curtain to billow. This sensory disruption signals the start of the performance: the video projections appear across two locations in the space, revealing a ghost-like figure locked in repetitive, ambiguous gestures.

The fragmented rhythm, unpredictable operating cycle, sonic discomfort, and spatial disorientation are imposed on viewers as they move through the installation, echoing the instability, waiting, and uncertainty central to the experience of displacement. The work transforms this in-between state into a shared, embodied experience.

Untitled is a photograph of a portrait, originally printed on tracing paper, then repeatedly scanned and reprinted, gradually losing detail and color with each cycle. The final image is printed on a semi-transparent sheet, mounted between plexiglass panels, and suspended in a custom 3D-printed frame with hangers.

A 3D-printed sculpture resembling a sphere with arrows extending in three
directions. Inside the sphere, a class 1 line laser system emits three laser beams, creating an illusionary boundary space. One of the laser beams projects towards the entrance of the exhibition area, engaging anyone who enters by making contact with their eyes. This projection imposes visual imaginary boundaries on those within the space.

Forbidden Fruit is a 3D-printed sculpture. The piece consists of two power sockets locked with a padlock, symbolically blocking access to the power source. An illustration of an apple and fire accompanies the sculpture, evoking unattainable desire. Within this context, the work reflects the unfulfilled desires and restrictions faced by queer individuals in the MENA region.

Hand Games is a 3-minute looping video of two individuals playing hand games, navigating the physical boundaries and dynamics of their relationship, ranging from sensuality to aggression. The video is projected onto a unique screen composed of eight layers of plexiglass, tracing paper, and a red gelatin filter. This layered setup allows the video to be viewed from three sides. By designing a screen that enables viewing from both sides and creates a reflection on the wall behind.

Whispers consists of two identical horn speakers, each modified with 3D-printed spikes. These spikes, acting as a metaphorical weapon, threaten the act of speaking itself. The horn speaker is a device designed to amplify sound and here becomes a paradoxical object. The work explores the tension between the intimate act of whispering and the desire to broadcast a secret. A whisper is traditionally private and fleeting, but paired with the horn speaker, it transforms into an amplified statement, one that remains unspoken, as the spikes prevent proximity. This contradiction reflects the vulnerability and danger in revealing personal truths.
